Sikorsky SH-60 Seahawk
Claim to Fame
Helicopter duties on the carrier are handled by versions of the SH-60 Seahawk which was developed from the Army's UH-60 Blackhawk. Helicopters everywhere are expected to fill a variety of duties and the same is true of those on carriers. A most visible duty is search and rescue. Anytime a carrier is conducting flight ops a helicopter is stationed off to starboard to rescue any aviators who go in the drink or any crew who might fall overboard. Helicopters also perform anti-submarine (ASW) and anti-surface (ASUW) duties as well as supply operations.
Interesting SH-60 Seahawk Fact
The tail of the SH-60 is much stronger than that of a Blackhawk in order to endure the rigors of shipboard landings.
