Claim to Fame
Even on a slow day it's hard to get excited about a maritime patrol aircraft. That's doubly true if the aircraft happens to be ugly to boot. Ugly or not, the Royal Navy last week would have been happy to have a couple of spare Nimrods at hand. Yet that was not to be since long serving MR2 Nimrods along with the new MRA4 versions were scrapped earlier this year due to defense cutbacks. Granted, the MRA4 had experienced appalling cost and schedule over-runs, but it seems rather vindictive and short sighted to chop the planes up if you're going to have to go begging to the colonies to make up the shortfall.
Interesting Nimrod Fact
The Nimrod is the first jet powered maritime patrol aircraft.
